Opening day in KY

Post by kygobbler » Sat Oct 25, 2014 9:17 pm

Well today was opening day and this morning I took one of my young cousins with me. We hunted one farm till about 8 am and decided to try a different farm since we haven't seen or heard anything.

While driving to the next farm we drove by the honey hole and see 3 gobblers in the middle of a field. I whipp the truck around on a dime. We sneak around to the back of the field around a building. I peek around the corner and see two young bucks sparing. We watch them for a minute and go around the other side of the building. I peek around that corner and see a nice 10 pt buck walking towards us. I warn my cousin and the buck is 20 yards from us and never notices us. After he goes into the woods we search the field hard for the gobblers but their gone.

We go to the next farm and don't see or hear anything there.

Now this afternoon I went back to the honey hole by myself. I had a flock of 1 super jake, 10 big poults, and 2 hens come to me. They come from directly behind me and hang out behind my right shoulder at 10 yards. I dont move a muscle and wishing I could shoot left handed. The birds stay there for a good 15 minutes then finally walk off and never giving me a shot.

Even though a bird didn't taste any hot lead it was a good day. Having them birds come up to me that close and me being able to hear and feel my heart beat thru my chest made it a great day.

Any time you can get birds to play, it's a win, win day ;) . Good luck the rest of the season.

That is true. I love to just sit back and watch and listen to them. Its funny I had a guy at work ask my why I like to fall hunt because they don't say anything in the fall. I laughed at him and said no you just don't listen.

Good luck to you also this fall.

Deer season not in? Sounds like a matter of time before you connect.

Deer season is in but I don't deer hunt. To me its like shooting a cow. No challenge. After my first turkey hunt I have never gone deer hunting again.
