Gorilla off my back

Post by Cut N Run » Sat Apr 13, 2013 10:23 pm

I set up the same place I shot video last weekend. The front that rolled through yesterday had 'em pretty well shut down. I only heard 3 gobbles in the distance from the roost this morning.

At 6:50 and 6:51 I heard shots on different sides of the property. The first one was from another guy who has rights to hunt that same piece of land, but was hunting across the road. The other shot was from some leased land in the same block of woods north of the property boundary, but not terribly far. Two turkeys gone in a minute's time & I was getting worried. I cutt hard on the long box around 7:35 and got no answer. About 10 minutes later, I heard spitting & drumming to my left. Out stepped a hen with a gobbler in tow. The gobbler cut across the field in front good enough to give me a good look. I guessed it was the 2 year old I saw last Saturday with maybe a 6-7 inch beard, 3/4 inch spurs, & about 17 pounds. I was describing it to my buddy on the radio and he reminded me how long it had been since I had shot a decent gobbler & asked what I was waiting on, so I busted him at 23 yards.

Turns out he weighs 19.5 pounds, has a 9.75 inch beard, and 1.125 inch spurs. Not a bonus bird, but I have to score him, because I only have one more tag. I'm happy to get the gorilla off my back and leave the woods with a turkey slung across my back instead. The beard picture is just to confirm the date on the paper.

Thanks guys. I appreciate it. I never thought I'd be so excited to take a gobbler that size, but I am. It was a fun hunt. Nothing changed about the way I hunt, I just needed a good place to go.

DUPREE, your bird is the first bonus points bird this team has managed so far, so I'm thinking you may want to put him in. See what the rest of the team says first though. Do you have a lot of tags, time, & good places to hunt left?
