Post by priverleadslinger » Sun Feb 02, 2014 1:57 pm

What are some good locator calls, i.e. crow, owl calls. Just looking for some suggestions or recommendations.

Hooks Calls makes a good owl locater. The owl call is very realistic but lacks volume in my opinion, which is why i prefer my natural voice. As for a great crow call wood havens real crow is a good one.

I have looked at both. I agree with using your own voice for the owl. That woodhaven crow call must be really nice, based on the price. The crow is more important to me because it's just hard to find one that sounds really good. I had one good one years ago but it fell out of my vest. I've tried to replace it, but all the others Ive tried just haven't sounded that great.

Wish I had the ability to use my voice, hard to get a good roll into the end of it since I'm tongue-tied (it is a real thing).

I've had a couple of owl hooters but nothing I could get the volume I wanted from. I'll be following this thread to see what suggestions are made.

I've had good results with a pileated woodpecker call.

I used an owl call walking an area where I thought some turks might be and got no response, on the way back I used a coyote call and then I got some gobbles of the roost.
Another time I was set up an a roost and another hunter came in blowing a crow call, the gobblers did not respond but they where there.

So I suggest bringing a coyote call also.

Good trick, if you own a wood duck call then you own a hawk call. It's just high on the first of the note rather than the back of the note when you're pushing air through it.
Head down, ears open, mouth closed. Kill turkeys.
